It makes good sense for an online business to have a credit card available to it, and obtaining one may be easier than you think. Many web-based companies trade in goods, which requires the shipment of same to buyers. And, those companies that opt to do business on eBay or Alibris have the need to ship purchased items to buyers.

If your business has a credit card, that card may be used to purchase shipping supplies, such as bubble mailers and boxes, and postage. An added benefit is that having a credit card enables you to account for amounts spent to ship items you sell if the card’s use is devoted to this purpose.

Even pure “services” business still need office equipment, such as printers, ink, thumb drives, and the like. And, there is often a need to repair or replaced older equipment. Keeping this type of spending on a single business credit card will simply tax preparation and record keeping.

Most traditional storefront businesses have a website and conduct a portion of their business via the internet. This being the case, a legitimate question becomes whether those businesses should maintain separate accounts for the online and storefront divisions of the business. The answer, of course, depends on the particular business at issue because for some businesses, keeping the accounts separate makes the most sense, while for others, having multiple credit cards under the same account is the most pragmatic approach.

Today, there is much less delineation between online and brick and mortar businesses. Virtually all online businesses require at least some work to be done offline, and the converse is true. Having a business credit card can be a huge help to your business by enabling you to track expenses simply by logging onto an account and viewing expenditures. When compared to the old fashioned method of sifting through a shopping bag full of meaningless receipts at tax time, the benefits become clear.

Online businesses tend to use online services, such as web design, content writing, and advertising, to grow their businesses. Having access to a business credit card makes consummmating such transactions a breeze.
